Ask Chabbles: What’s an Upper Respiratory Infection?

Posted November 12th, 2011 by Anna

Chabbles: I’ve got the sneezes. Is this normal? Should my mom take me to the vet? Love, Dexter

Dexter: That could be an Upper Respiratory Infection, or URI. URI is almost always present in shelters, just as colds are common in children at daycare. URI is caused by a variety of organisms that cause symptoms such as sneezing, eye and nose discharge, congestion and lack of appetite. Sometimes when kitties get stressed – like moving to a new home – they can start to show signs of URI. If you are having any of these symptoms, your mom should call your vet, especially since URI can be contagious to your new animal brothers and sister. Yours truly, Chabbles
